During the holidays most families get together to feast and enjoy each other’s company. This is also one of the few times of year when all family members will be gathered under one roof. It is a good time to be merry and feast, but it’s also a great opportunity to discuss important family matters like long term care for the elders of the group.
It’s OK to feel some anxiety about the pending conversation – who really wants to discuss such a heavy subject, especially at a time when we are supposed to be joyous? However, this is a topic that may affect most if not all the members of the family and once the plans are in place, you’ll be glad you had the talk.
As you prepare for the holidays, include long term care in your agenda. You don’t have to be overly serious or somber about the matter. In fact, it’s best that you pose it as an open ended question and ask for contribution from all members present. Good phrases to use are “Do you have any ideas?” or “What do you think?” Be mindful of the opinions of others and take all options into consideration. The key to your success here is letting others know that you are sincere in your requests.
Make this holiday season truly family-oriented by handling important issues as a family. Doing so will definitely go a long way towards strengthening your family ties.
